Like the fourth grader who jumps higher and higher in a desperate attempt to prove the laws of gravity don't bind him to the Earth, we ignore the forces of interpersonal gravity. Rather than acknowledging we control no one but ourselves, we insist...

The Office Gatekeeper - A Target for Bullies

(Michael 2013-May-22, 18:46) I work in a job I really like. Unfortunately, besides managing the office for an apartment complex, I'm charged with noting when other employees come late or leave early. As a result, some employees don't like me.

How do I figure out what happened during a he said/she said fight that took place in our office last weekend?

the Grass Isn't Always Greener

(Michael 2013-May-17, 18:03) Chances are you've met the man (or woman) who keeps his job options wide open. Even after he lands a great job, he keeps his resume on monster.com, scans the classifieds with his Sunday coffee and attends as many trade conferences as he can to network. Whenever he meets a manager who might hire him he suggests lunch just to "explore the opportunities." Like the person who avoids commitment in personal relationships, this employee continuously seeks a more appealing job.

Last Minute Man

(Michael 2013-May-16, 21:21) I work for the original Last Minute Manager. He almost misses every deadline imaginable, from a plane departure to a legal filing. I've worked for him for a year and have never received an assignment that wasn't handed to me at the last minute, putting me under extreme pressure.

It's clear he loves the adrenaline rush. I don't. I can't stand turning in half-done assignments. I've stayed as late as 2 a.m. to make sure I meet deadlines despite his lateness.

When I moved here in February, I was immediately hired at a popular local restaurant. On my first day and since, I've noticed health code and safety violations.
I asked the manager about these and he shut me down, telling me it wasn't my business. I kept silent until...

Facebook Oops

(Michael 2013-May-10, 17:12) When I arrived at work this morning, my supervisor stopped me at the door and fired me. I wasn't allowed to come into my office. He told me not to expect a reference.
He then handed me a printout of a Facebook post...

Sleep Deprivation

(Michael 2013-May-07, 17:35) Q. I drive a bus -- and I hope you never ride on it.
Even though I don't drink coffee or alcohol, I can't ever get to sleep at night. That means when I show up for my shift, I'm functioning on three or at most four hours of sleep. I'm always tired and have gotten used to it but dread the day my reflexes won't be fast enough to handle some lunatic driver.
Do I tell my boss or not? If I tell, what happens to me? Will they automatically fire me?

QUIT OR YOU’RE FIRED: ALASKA

(Michael 2013-May-03, 18:26) Q. I've worked for my company for nine years. I like my job and expected to retire three years from now.
Two months ago, the owner had a heart attack and died. He left the company to his wife. Last week, she asked me to meet with her. She told me I needed to find a new job by the end of the month...

I lied to my boss and now I don't know what to do. I was swamped with projects and let a low-priority task sit under the paperwork pile until too late. When my boss asked me about the project, I freaked out inside and said I'd done it a month earlier. Then, I pulled the paperwork out and quickly completed it, only to discover the deal was dead because we missed a crucial deadline.

Workplace Coach Questions

(Michael 2013-Apr-19, 17:47) This is where our Workplace Coaches answer your submitted questions and provide sound solutions with solid information.
